How we work

The charity finds and funds some of the best medical research in the world for the benefit of babies, children and young people. Our gold standard scientific review process ensures that we only fund the best doctors and researchers in children’s hospitals, specialist units and universities across the UK.

Our broad programme aims to both understand the causes of disease and disability and improve treatment and care. We believe the best ideas come from doctors working with patients on a day to day basis and the leading researchers who strive to advance medical knowledge to help save lives. That is why we only support the highest quality applications for research funding from hospitals and universities across the UK. Our flexibility also means we can take advantage of new technologies and respond to emerging needs or new ideas.

We also support promising doctors and researchers early in their careers through our prestigious Research Training Fellowships ensuring high quality research both now and in the future.  This scheme is vital as it is recognised that there is a shortage of researchers in obstetrics, paediatrics and child health in the UK.

We are committed to assessing the impact of the research we support and sharing the results with other doctors, researchers and families.

We work in partnership with other charities to help maximise our impact in child health. For example, we are funding the first major UK scientific study into multiple sclerosis (MS) in children together with the MS Society, in the hope of making a significant step forward in understanding this disabling condition.

Research highlight - heart rate sensor

ResuscitationA heart rate sensor that allows continuous monitoring of babies during resuscitation could give doctors crucial extra seconds otherwise lost using hand-held stethoscopes. Read more about the heart rate sensor
