One of our key research aims is to support medical research that will help prevent life-threatening pregnancy complications, reduce the unacceptably high rate of premature birth, and improve care for sick and vulnerable babies. Find out more about the projects supported by our Touching Tiny Lives appeal below.
Pregnancy complications
Our latest Touching Tiny Lives research projects continue a proud history of Action Medical Research funding that has benefited thousands of mothers-to-be and their babies. Yet there is still so much to learn about conditions such as pre-eclampsia, and how to protect babies from stillbirth, or complications during labour.
Reducing premature birth
Around 50,000 babies are born too early in the UK each year, yet so little is known about what causes premature birth or how to prevent it. Our projects aim to improve understanding of the conditions that put babies at risk of an early birth and enable doctors to find new treatments.
Improving care for sick babies
Every year in the UK around one in ten newborn babies need special care. Many more require extra support during their first year of life. We are investing in research projects that help doctors and nurses find the best ways to care for sick and vulnerable babies.
