Double delight for little Ada

Born extremely prematurely, little Ada has just celebrated her naming day AND her first birthday, to the delight and relief of her granny, Petronella, who is one of Action’s most loyal supporters…

Yesterday was amazing. We celebrated the naming day and the upcoming first birthday of our youngest granddaughter – a day we did not expect to have and, if we did, we expected it to be a day tinged with sadness too.

Our daughter-in-law's waters broke at just 23 weeks pregnant while flying to India for business. After two weeks in hospital there, still hanging on to the baby, recovering from a kidney infection and contracting an antibiotic resistant e-coli, it was decided to air ambulance her back to Queen Charlotte’s in London, where she was registered for the birth.

A week later on March 11 by emergency caesarean tiny Ada was born weighing 835 grams and placed straight into a little sandwich bag.

Both babe and mum were quite poorly. At about one month old I met Ada for the first time as only parents were allowed in the neonatal unit during winter months to avoid flu and colds.

Ada's due date would have been June 16. She was finally allowed home at the end of June 2015, but still on full oxygen, which she was weaned off during the next few months.

Finally at the end of September she was allowed off the oxygen.

Today she is a happy, bright little girl with her first front teeth and rapidly letting us know her character, definitely loving all the attention of her party and the family around her.

The fight for little lives…

As a charity, Action is dedicated to funding research into prematurity and pregnancy complications. We’re currently supporting eight projects by top researchers – you can find out more here. You can read about little Samuel, born at 30 weeks here and also in another lovely birthday blog by his mum Jo.
