100 nutty old cars aim for £100k for kids’ charity

Scumrun is excited to announce that the 13th staging of the original charity driving event, taking place from 17 – 21 May 2018, will support children’s charity Action Medical Research.

Scumrun, the infamous and original charity drive, first held in 2006, are delighted to announce that the 2018 event will raise money for the UK’s pioneering children’s research charity Action Medical Research.  Action Medical Research have been been funding medical breakthroughs which directly save children's lives since 1952.  Examples of their successes include helping to fund the first polio vaccines in the UK, ultrasound in pregnancy and the rubella vaccine.  Their work has helped to save thousands of children’s lives and will continue to change many more.

Since its inception, Scumrun (previously Scumball 3000) has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for various UK’s children’s charities and is hoping to secure a donation total of approximately £100,000 in 2018.

Participants enter old cars, restricted in value and engine size, and are encouraged to modify them and create a fancy dress theme.   The route (which is secret) is revealed each morning and the event takes teams around Europe to some famous landmarks and events.

Scumrun’s founder, Edward White, comments ‘We’re so thrilled to be working with such an important and pioneering cause.  We’ve been speaking with the team behind the scenes for over a year and are confident that this year’s event will make a lasting difference to children and babies in the UK suffering from awful conditions, many of which do not receive much, if any, government funding.  2018 will be a great year.’

The event welcomes some new classes in 2018 including the original £500 limited class, a new class restricting vehicle values to £150 and engine sizes to 1 litre so teams will need some mechanical savvy to take part and complete this challenging event!  There are also additional classes that cater for varying levels of mechanical experience and vehicle value.

Action Medical Research is a UK-wide children’s charity which funds desperately needed research to tackle the diseases that devastate the lives of so many of our children.

Toby Tennant is Action’s Head of Relationship Fundraising: “We are really excited to be a part of Scumrun 2018 and can’t wait to see some of the wacky car creations that take on this charity challenge!

“Currently we can only afford to fund around half of the children’s research that we want to simply because of a lack of funds. Every penny really does help; thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you on the start line!”

Action is currently funding research into conditions including asthma, prematurity, epilepsy, meningitis, cerebral palsy, brain cancer and some rare and distressing conditions.
