Tina Middleton from the Mid-Kent Committee of Action Medical Research has been honoured for her loyal service to the UK-wide children’s charity.
Tina, who has helped to raise funds for the charity for more than a decade, received an outstanding achievement award in recognition of her work at a regional meeting on Tuesday, 15 March.
The stalwart supporter from Tonbridge has taken part in a number of events for Action Medical Research, including a trek in Venezuela which raised thousands of pounds. She has also been an integral part of the charity’s Castle Ride 100 since the inaugural event, helping to promote it locally, volunteering on the day and bringing a team of friends and family to help out.
“My involvement with Action Medical Research began with a trip to Butlins where the charity was promoting a trek to Venezuela to climb Mount Roraima. I'd never done anything adventurous before and thought 'Why not give it a go?' So after a lot of fundraising I set off with my husband and our best friend on an adventure of a lifetime,” says Tina.
“On our return I didn't want the adventure to end so since then I have helped and supported the charity at events from bike rides to balls.
“It amazes me that Action has touched most people's lives, whether it be the polio vaccine or having an ultrasound in pregnancy, so I feel very proud to be involved with this amazing charity which works so hard to fund research into some very distressing and debilitating childhood conditions and disabilities.”
Action Medical Research’s outstanding achievement award is the highest recognition given to its volunteers and is signed by the charity’s patron, HRH The Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh.
Paula Ray, the charity’s Community Fundraising Manager for London and the south east, said: “We’re very proud to present Tina with this special award in grateful recognition of her exceptional commitment and dedication to Action Medical Research over so many years.
“Tina has been involved with the charity for over 10 years but she goes beyond being a volunteer; she is part of the Action family. As well as her South American trek and the Castle Ride, Tina has volunteered and participated in numerous other events over the years and more recently has joined the new Mid-Kent Committee, offering support in organising the Kent Ladies’ Lunch and managing to secure sponsorship and prizes locally.
“She has been a great support to our team and it's thanks to the extraordinary hard work of volunteers like Tina that the charity has been able to establish such a long and distinguished track record of funding life-changing research to help babies and children. We hope people will continue to support their local fundraisers so we can do even more in the future.”
Since Action Medical Research began in 1952, it has spent more than £115 million helping support some amazing medical breakthroughs that have helped save thousands of children’s lives and changed many more. Some of the work it previously supported is now commonplace in medical care, such as the vaccines for polio and rubella, the use of ultrasound scanning in pregnancy and the importance of taking folic acid before and during pregnancy to prevent spina bifida.
It is currently funding research into premature birth, meningitis, Down syndrome and epilepsy, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.
