Children’s health charities Action Medical Research and Action for A-T are proud to announce that they will be joining forces to co-fund up to £1,000,000 of research in 2026 to tackle the rare degenerative condition, Ataxia Telangiectasia.

Ataxia Telangiectasia (A-T) is a rare, degenerative condition that affects many
different parts of the body and generally appears in early childhood. Symptoms progressively worsen, leading to full-time wheelchair use – usually before the early teens. A-T occurs in approximately 1 in 300,000 live births. However, A-T diagnosis can be delayed or missed due to its similarities with other conditions.

Through working together, the two charities believe more can be achieved to help develop treatments and work towards a cure for Ataxia Telangiectasia.

Action Medical Research Chief Executive, Julie Buckler explains: “We’re proud to be using our expert peer review system to work together with Action for A-T to identify research to tackle this devastating condition.”

Sean Kelly, Chief Executive of Action for A-T says: “It is vital that we do all that we can to speed up the process of finding a cure or treatment for A-T. The partnership with Action Medical Research will allow us to fund even more research into this brutal degenerative condition and offer hope to the families who need it most.”

Action Medical Research and Action for A-T invite applications for translational medical research projects that have the potential to treat or enable medical interventions for Ataxia Telangiectasia (A-T) in childhood. The call is focused on child health, with interventions being proposed targeting babies, children and young people with A-T.

The fund aims to support high-quality projects for up to three years duration, providing a maximum of £250,000 per project and it is anticipated that 4-5 projects will be funded through this call.

Applicants should complete an outline form, summarising their proposed research project by 28 January 2026 at 5pm.
