Cyclists from across the construction industry united this September for the seventh annual Ziggurat ride, scaling the rugged Tuscan landscape, raising a staggering £1.2 million over seven years for Action Medical Research, a children's charity funding life-changing research.

Supported by lead sponsors Brett, Day Group, Maylim, Herbosch-Kiere and SIG, Ziggurat is now a major event in the construction industry calendar. This year’s tour saw cyclists ride over 235 miles and climb 17,000 feet. Starting in Pisa and concluding in Lucca, the route explored the beautiful yet challenging Tuscan countryside.

The cyclists represented a number of companies including additional teams from Velocity Magazine, Willmott Dixon, Aggregate Industries and Baxall Construction, amongst many others, all pedalling together for an incredible cause.

Sarah Stevenson, Senior Partnerships Development Manager, Action Medical Research, says

“We are absolutely thrilled that this year our riders raised over £215k which has helped contribute to a whopping total of over £1.2 million to help fund vital research to help change the lives of children affected by disease and disability. Everyone at Action is so grateful to all the riders who took part in Ziggurat, in particular our dedicated sponsors – Brett, Day Group, Maylim, Herbosch-Kiere and SIG – without their contribution and support, this ride would not be possible.”

Bill Brett, Chairman, Brett Group, says:

“Brett have been involved with the Ziggurat ride since it began in 2017. Over the last seven years the event has attracted around 500 people from the construction and building materials industry who have taken part in completing an endurance challenge to raise both awareness of the Action Medical Research charity and funds for their ground-breaking research. Brett are extremely proud to sponsor and take part in this yearly event which helps to improve the lives of sick children and their families.”

Since it was founded in 1952, Action Medical Research has been at the forefront of pioneering medical research, including helping to introduce the first polio vaccines in the UK, developing the use of ultrasound in pregnancy and testing the rubella vaccine. The charity is striving to develop treatments and cures to help save children affected by rare disease, as well as funding research into conditions including brain cancers, epilepsy, asthma and premature birth.
