Davina’s Big Sussex Bike Ride raises thousands

Davina McCall has heralded her ‘Big Sussex Bike Ride’ a “massive success” for Action Medical Research following the event on Sunday, 25 June.

More than 400 riders peddled their way around a variety of routes which all started and finished at the East Sussex National Golf Club, near Uckfield.

The popular TV presenter, who has supported Action since she was nine years-old, said: “I absolutely loved it! We’ve been holding this bike ride for seven years now and the atmosphere is just always amazing – it’s great to see so many people getting out and active across Sussex.”

“Everyone’s always so smiley - even when they’re peddling up those hills - and I’m delighted that it’s been yet another massive success for Action!”

Riders were once again given an option of cycling 21, 40 or 68 miles around East Sussex. The event is one of ten bespoke cycle events organised by Action throughout the year.

Community Fundraising Manager for the South East Paula Ray thinks it was the best yet: “Well, what can I say? Davina was her brilliant effervescent self, running around taking photos with people, starting the riders off and then cycling the 68 miles!

“I’d like to thank all of our lovely volunteers who helped make the day run smoothly and also all of the riders. It’s the cyclists themselves who really make these events special and this year’s ride was definitely one to remember.”

Funds are still being collected but it is estimated the total amount raised will be in excess of £25,000.

Action Medical Research is a UK-wide children’s charity which funds desperately needed research to tackle the diseases that devastate the lives of so many of our children. It has been funding medical breakthroughs since it began in 1952 including helping to introduce the first polio vaccines in the UK, developing the use of ultrasound in pregnancy and testing the rubella vaccine.

The charity is currently funding research into conditions including asthma, prematurity, epilepsy, meningitis, cerebral palsy, brain cancer and some rare and distressing conditions.
