Mitie takes fundraising up a gear with charity’s cycling challenge

Employees at Mitie Landscapes are taking their fundraising up a gear by cycling from London to Paris this month in aid of UK-wide children’s charity Action Medical Research.

A team of 17 has signed up for the 300-mile ride to the French capital from 20-24 July to help raise money to save and change the lives of babies and children.

A few members of the team first rode from London to Paris 10 years ago so MD of Mitie Landscapes Tim Howell, a keen cyclist, says it was an anniversary worth celebrating... with another ride!

"We wanted a great charity to do it for and it's impossible not to get enthusiastic about Action Medical Research - the work that they do for children is very inspiring," explains Tim, who says most of the team have been spending as much time as possible on two wheels.

"Some people new to cycling have been putting in some impressive distances and training; others have joined a gym and are going to spinning classes while a few still have to get off the ground.

"We’re starting a regular motivating newsletter to record training and give advice and support to all of us who are taking part.

"Everyone is looking forward to it – nervously in some cases. It will certainly be a challenge, but a good chance to have some fun as well."

Action’s London to Paris ride, which is in its 16th year, will finish in Paris on Saturday, 23 July, with cyclists riding in convoy down the Champs Élysées to the Eiffel Tower the day before the iconic Tour de France race ends along the same streets.

In July 2015 almost 250 cyclists raised more than £360,000 for the children’s charity and cyclists participating in this year’s ride – the biggest of its kind - will be raising money to help the hundreds of thousands of sick and disabled children in the UK.

With the help of its supporters, Action Medical Research has played a significant role in many medical breakthroughs for more than 60 years, from the development of the first UK polio vaccines to the use of ultrasound in pregnancy – helping to save thousands of children’s lives and change many more.

It is currently funding research into meningitis, Down syndrome, epilepsy and premature birth, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.
