Race The Sun lands in the Isle of Wight

Following the success of Action Medical Research’s ‘Race The Sun’ series in Brecon Beacons and the Lake District, the charity challenge is just days away from landing in the Isle of Wight!

Teams from across the UK will be converging in Newport on Saturday, 8 July to cycle, trek and canoe their way to victory.

Events Marketing Manager for Action Gina Campbell says: “The atmosphere on these challenges is always amazing - there is such a great camaraderie among those taking part. I think it’s because there is a shared appreciation of the training that people put themselves through, as well as the sheer accomplishment of completing the course. There’s often a healthy competitive element too!”

Teams of four will start at minute intervals from 5.30am on the Saturday for a 25 mile cycle ride to New Battery. From there, it will be a 12 mile trek along the Tennyson Trail before cycling 19 miles to the River Medina and then completing the course with a 1.5km canoe.

All that before the sun goes down!

A total of 50 teams have registered to take part in this inaugural event. Evercore, an independent investment banking advisory firm, is entering seven teams and hoping to raise more than £16,000 for Action.

Evercore’s Chief Operating Officer Matthew Lindsey-Clark said: “We’re no strangers to this sort of gruelling challenge, having taken part in the RTS Brecon Beacons event last year. That was a really good day out which was extremely well organised with experienced marshals throughout the course.”

“Given the number of teams we have participating, while everyone will be aiming to clock a respectable time there will no doubt be an element of friendly competition! As long as the sun doesn’t set before everyone has finished, we’ll be happy!”

Action Medical Research is a UK-wide children’s charity which funds desperately needed research to tackle the diseases that devastate the lives of so many of our children. It has been funding medical breakthroughs since it began in 1952 including helping to introduce the first polio vaccines in the UK, developing the use of ultrasound in pregnancy and testing the rubella vaccine.

The charity is currently funding research into conditions including asthma, prematurity, epilepsy, meningitis, cerebral palsy, brain cancer and some rare and distressing conditions.
