Go West stars Richard Drummie and Peter Cox helped to raise £20,000 for children’s charity Action Medical Research when they hosted a ladies’ lunch in Kent on Friday, 7 October.
The King of Wishful Thinking hitmakers performed for 220 ecstatic guests at the Mercure Maidstone Great Danes Hotel after a drinks reception and lunch, while an auction packed with prizes including a week at a villa in Portugal also helped to raise money to save and change the lives of babies and children.
Paula Ray, the charity’s Community Fundraising Manager for the region, thanked the Mid-Kent Committee for Action Medical Research for helping to organise the event, which was supported by Next.
“It was a fantastic day and people travelled from all over the country to meet Go West and have a dance to some of their favourite songs,” she says.
“This was the first time Richard and Peter have hosted this event in Kent and it was a great way to give guests an afternoon to remember while helping to fund even more pioneering research for sick and disabled babies and children.”
Guitarist Richard has been a long-term supporter of Action Medical Research and has taken part in charity treks to Costa Rica and Venezuela alongside Spandau Ballet singer Tony Hadley – who hosted a similar event last October – as well as performing at other lunch events.
For more than 60 years Action Medical Research has been saving and changing children’s lives and has spent more than £115 million funding medical breakthroughs, including helping to introduce the first polio vaccines in the UK, discovering the importance of taking folic acid before and during pregnancy to prevent spina bifida, developing the use of ultrasound in pregnancy and testing the rubella vaccine.
The charity is currently funding research into conditions including prematurity, epilepsy, meningitis, cerebral palsy, brain cancer and some rare and distressing conditions.
