Smeg UK boss to go the extra mile for Action Medical Research

Updated:

The head of Smeg UK is going the extra mile for children’s charity Action Medical Research by tackling the Virgin London Marathon in April.

Mike Giddings, Managing Director of Smeg UK, will be among the 38,000 people running the 26.2 miles on Sunday, 24 April, as part of his ongoing mission to raise funds to save and change the lives of sick and disabled babies and children.

“As a passionate fundraiser, both personally and corporately, I'm delighted to once again be supporting Action Medical Research, running for such a worthy cause and in doing so helping to raise vital funds for the charity,” says Mike. “I'm looking to challenge my personal best in London this year and finish the marathon in under four hours.”

Since completing Action Medical Research’s London to Paris bike ride in 2014, Smeg UK have been enthusiastic supporters of the UK-wide children’s charity: to date, staff have raised £75,000 through fundraising efforts from bake sales and quiz nights to office walks and Come Dine With Me-themed events.

In 2015 the Abingdon-based appliance supplier took its support up a gear with a challenging tour created by Action’s cycling experts between the mountains of Northern Italy. The ride saw 35 cyclists, including Smeg customers and employees, covering roads from Venice to Milan; this year they’re bound for Italy again to ride from Florence to Rome.

With the help of its supporters, Action Medical Research has played a significant role in many medical breakthroughs for more than 60 years, from the development of the first UK polio vaccines to the use of ultrasound in pregnancy.

The charity has more than £11 million currently invested in the work of more than 230 top researchers, working on over 75 projects across the UK into meningitis, Down syndrome, epilepsy and premature birth, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.
