‘Ziggurat’ riders raise funds for Action

Updated:

Children’s charity Action Medical Research recently held its third annual ‘Ziggurat’ bike ride for members of the constructions and built environment sector, kindly sponsored by Grafton and Brett Group.

This year’s challenge saw more than 40 keen riders set off from London on Wednesday 18 September headed for the Glade of Armistace via Dunkirk, Arras, Saint Quinten and finishing in Compiegne.

The cyclists were all representing a number of companies including Balfour Beatty, Willmott Dixon, Construction Europe, Laing O-Rourke and CLOCS.

Event Manager Sarah Stevenson said: “We are delighted to have seen so many different companies taking part this year - the most we have ever had.

“It was a fabulous ride and the battlefields really made everyone appreciate the freedom we have to enjoy such a tour.”

Riding over 340 miles with a climb of more than 12,000 feet, the route took the challengers through some historical sites from WW1 including the Thiepval Memorial for the missing of the Somme.

Historian John Harris joined the riders at stops along the way for the full four days where he spoke in small groups to the riders about the significance of the memorials.

The weather was sunny and windy for most of it - with temperatures reaching 29 celcius at the Glade of Armistice.

It is estimated that so far the charity ride has raised around £90,000.

Sarah said: “On behalf of Action I would like to thank everyone who took part and helped support this event, including our brilliant sponsors.

“This is a fantastic event which allowed all the riders to bond and do a bit of networking! We are beyond pleased with the fundraising total so far and can’t wait to do it again next year.'
