The Willmott Dixon Challenge

Willmott Dixon has teamed up with children's charity Action Medical Research to offer you the chance to stay active and keep in touch. Take part in the Willmott Dixon challenge and help to fund vital research to save children and babies lives.

Whilst you’re stuck at home why not make your daily exercise count!

Join the Willmott Dixon Challenge and become part of our socially distant community, have a bit of fun competition and stay fit and healthy at the same time.

Take part by timing your own 5k run, 20k bike ride or a 15 minute stair climb challenge every week then submit your result to earn your place on the Willmott Dixon Challenge weekly leaderboards.

Donate just £3 for your challenge of choice each week and help fund research that will fight for tiny lives.

Missing your weekly 5k run? Can't join your local running group? Craving that race day feeling? Make your daily exercise count and complete your own timed 5k run, jog or walk.

With all events and social gatherings on hold for the time being, why not take on this challenge to see your progress each week and keep up a bit of friendly competitive spirit with the Willmott Dixon Challenge.

Simply go out, or jump on a treadmill, to complete a run, jog or walk of 5 kilometres as part of your daily exercise and enter the leader board for that week. Take part anywhere, at anytime between Monday - Sunday to compete in the race that week. Results will be published by 4pm on the following Monday.

RIDE.

With opportunities to ride becoming more limited, 20k will be a challenge for some and a sprint for others!

Build up your speed and race against yourself and your colleagues to fight for the top spot on the leaderboard each week.

Pick your route, or hook up to the turbo-trainer, and ride out any time between Monday - Sunday to be in with a chance to head up the leaderboard for that week, with results being published by 4pm on Monday after.

RISE.

Use your stairs at home to get fit, set a timer for 15 minutes and get climbing up and down, being sensible and careful of course!

Count how many steps it would be to go both up and down your stair case and keep a tally sheet at the bottom. When you've finished you won't have lost count and can quickly do the maths!

No stairs? No problem! Find a single step to count your up and down steps on and keep a tally sheet whilst you go.

Time your climb anytime between Monday - Sunday, enter your final count of steps (both up and down) and donate £3 when you've completed your challenge. Check the results from midday the next Monday to see where you place on the Willmott Dixon Challenge leader board.

STEP 1. RUN. RIDE. OR RISE.

You've got Monday - Sunday to get cracking on your 5k run, pedalling your 20k ride or climbing those stairs. Use tracking apps (like Strava or MapMyFitness) to help you with your route planning and don’t forget to time it, be safe and stick to social distancing.

Tell all the friends and family you haven't seen for a while to join in so you can compete against them!

STEP 2. TELL US YOUR TIME

Once you've completed your challenge fill out the form below to submit your result. Results will be approved by us, and please be honest or it’s no fun for anyone!

Please follow instructions on the form or click here to donate £3 for your entry to each challenge you take part in and help fund our research that will fight for tiny lives... that’s pretty incredible!

STEP 3. CHECK THE LEADERBOARD

Sit tight and wait to see where you will rank on the Willmott Dixon challenge leaderboard.

Results will be uploaded the following Monday by 4pm (this will also be emailed out to all members of the Willmott Dixon challenge)

Ella's story

Ella was born six weeks early leaving her vulnerable to infection.

Ella fell ill with what at first seemed to be a simple cold but soon turned into a fight for life. She was rushed to hospital with a severe case of bronchiolitis, a potentially life-threatening lung infection. With your help we are funding research searching for effective treatments to fight this infection, giving hope to families like Ella's.

What’s the first rule of The Willmott Dixon Challenge?

Tell everyone about it ….and beat them on the weekly leaderboards! 

I’m already fundraising for Action, do I still need to donate?

You’re amazing! Thanks so much for continuing to support us. If you’re fundraising for us for another event, doing this as your training or even doing it to raise more sponsorship, you don’t need to donate every time as we know you’re working hard enough – enjoy the Challenge!

Can I do more than one of the challenges each week?

Yes! We kindly ask you donate £3 for each challenge you take part in.

Do I have to do it every week?

No you don’t. We’d love you to join us every week but if you can’t, please do come back when you can whilst the challenge continues.

Do I just do one of the challenges?

You choose! Do all three one week and just do one challenge the next. You can mix it up or stay consistent, it’s entirely up to you. 

Do I only do it once a week?

That’s what we’re suggesting but there’s no limit on your entries (within reason of course!). If you submit results more than once a week, it will mean you appear in multiple places on the leaderboard the following Monday. 

RISE. challenge: How do I keep count of my steps?

Count how many it would be to go up and down the stairs your climbing and stick a scrap bit of paper at the bottom of your staircase. Start your timer and the challenge, then each time you reach the bottom you should make a tally mark. When the time’s up, multiply your tally score by the number of stairs it is up and down your staircase. Voila, there’s your result! 

RUN. and RIDE. challenges: How do I map 5km or 20km if I’m going outdoors?

Use an app like Strava, MapMyFitness or Garmin to measure your distance as you go. The beauty of this is it will time it all for you too. Or, if you want to be free of technology and just take a stopwatch, pre-plan your route using sites such as MapMyRun, Google Maps.

If I don’t donate will my entry be included?

Yes, we would still include your result and we hope you will stay in touch with us and support us in the future. Whilst we encourage you to donate each time you submit an entry, we understand that not everyone can afford to donate at this challenging time.  

How do you know the results aren’t all made up?

Everyone loves a bit of fair competition, and we can only ask that everyone is honest with their entries, but we can’t guarantee they’re 100% correct just yet. Whilst we’re looking for the best way for us to validate evidence, we will be keeping an eye on suspicious results and challenging them when it’s appropriate.  

How long will the challenge go on for?

We’re currently planning for this to go on for the remainder of April and May but we will constantly be monitoring government advice regarding COVID-19 and we may look to extend the challenge if the lockdown continues. 

What happens if we’re no longer allowed outdoors for exercise?

Rest assured we’ll be in touch with all Willmott Dixon Challenge regulars and update all our webpages with links to the latest government advice. If we’re no longer allowed outdoors for exercise, we will continue the RISE. Challenge, you can continue the RUN. or RIDE. Challenges if you have indoor equipment, but we will of course look for other things to add to the club to keep up the fun competition! 

ABOUT ACTION

Surprisingly, medical research tackling childhood diseases is poorly funded in the UK. Action Medical Research has a critical job to do in helping fill this gap to protect children.

The prospects for finding new cures and treatments is almost within our grasp. Right now we are funding vital research projects with many more ready to go – but we simply can’t fund them all.

With your help, we’re determined to change this and make a real difference to children's lives.
